Agriculture & Industry

Our Main Agricultural Process

Shalomania's main practice of agriculture is commercial agriculture, or farming for a profit. Our main purpose for farming is to have some sort of income or trading leverage over other countries. Since Shalomania is a semi-peripheral country, lots of our income comes from trading with other core countries. Our farming is considered intensive agriculture since most of our agriculture is performed by farmers or technology.

Different Crops

Shalomania farms a variety of crops, but our most common crops are tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Shalomania's hot and humid climate makes vegetable farming one of the easiest and best farming methods for our country. Our country is part of an agribusiness with other countries around the world. As soon as our crops are harvested, they are used for trading purposes with other countries. Shalomania's main farming practice is truck farming/market gardening.

Crop Layout

Our crops are grown very close to the city center to make trading and transportation as easy as possible. When comparing our farming to the Von Thunen Model, most of our farms are located in zone 1, or the ring closest to the center. Our land costs do not influence our farming location because Shalomania’s main priority is making sure that the transportation and trade process is as efficient as possible; therefore, the bid-rent theory does not apply to our country.

Agricultural Development

Agriculture in Shalomania has changed a lot since it first started. Our country has learned and changed so much because of the impact of both the Second and Third Agricultural Revolutions. Firstly, the Second Agricultural Revolution made farming for vegetables a lot easier because of the new technological innovations, such as the tractor. Shalomania invested lots of money into machinery to make agricultural products less labor-intensive. Finally, the Third Agricultural Revolution, or the Green Revolution, introduced scientific discoveries such as pesticides, fertilizers, and GMOs. Not only do these discoveries boost crop yields, but they also help with the idea of reducing labor.

Significance of Farming

Farming in Shalomania is very complicated and very unique because, since our country specializes in industrialized work, not many jobs for farming are available, even though our country relies on agriculture for trading. This is a direct result of the technological advancements from the previous agricultural revolutions. Agriculture takes up a lot of space in our country, and it not providing many job opportunities is not good for the overall economy. Our agricultural practices do tend to result in deforestation because of a lack of crop yield. Shalomania has lots of forests, and over time, the amount just keeps dropping because of land needed for farming purposes.

Shalom Job Sectors

Our primary sector population is about 10%, our secondary sector makes up 60% of our population. Tertiary sectors make up 20% of our working population. Quaternary sectors make up 7.5% and the quinary sector makes up the last 2.5%.

Industrial Development Status

Shalomania is a developed, semi-peripheral, industrialized country. Our biggest industries are manufacturing goods and fishing. Most of the country's industrial zones are located near the sea and within large cities. This is because of the large amount of fishing and product manufacturing done within the country. Some areas that could be a boost to the countrys' economy is the countryside. The countryside is not heavily utilized and could be a good area for expanding the economy through large farming operations. This could bring new local businesses that sell fresh crops and allowing more jobs to be picked up. The increase in farmer businesses would allow for agglomeration to boost the economy heavily.

Global Trade Status

Shalomania being a semi-periphery country relies on training with other core countries across the world. Lots of our income comes from trading because the core countries rely on the smaller periphery and semi-periphery countries to get goods and services.

Import/Export Trade Status

Shalomania does trade with other countries across the world. One of our biggest trade partners is State #3, we trade with them to be able to provide enough food for our large population. Shalomania promotes free trade because our government does not interfere with trading partners or policies. Most of our goods are farmed and manufactured and shipped to other countries for other resources. Jobs and production are all outsourced with our farming being close4 to city centers and our factories are located near cities and around coasts. As farming is becoming more prominent in Shalomania, we started to see some deindustrialization across the country because of the high demand for agricultural products.

Economic Theory

In Shalomania, factories and commercial establishments are placed according to Weber's Least Cost Theory, in which the intention is to minimize transportation, labor, and clustering costs. Examples include industries involving heavy materials, such as steel manufacturing, which are placed near sources of raw materials in order to minimize shipping expenses. Factories producing goods that increase in weight during the process of manufacture, like breweries, are situated near large cities in order to reduce costly deliveries of final goods to customers.
